Motivation
Where has my motivation gone?
We are all born with motivation. You only have to look at a toddler;
they are always on the go, discovering new experiences, learning
what is a pleasant and what is not and then re-experiencing the
pleasant or interesting ones.
Motivation is the drive behind the learning that is essential for
every child’s development. Children are naturally motivated,
then as they get older, adults start to become involved, we tell
them to stop doing “this”, we tell them that they could
do “that” else better, we tell them that something else
must be done in a particular way and if it isn’t it is wrong.
In short we start fill the child’s mind with limitations.
As life progresses the child also starts to relate to their own
negative experiences, viewing them not as part of the learning process,
but rather as part of a failure process.
Many adults, unfortunately, are controlled by self-limiting beliefs
and behaviour that have been picked up and nurtured over the years.
These beliefs become central to our self-belief system, they become
a part of us even though they are having a negative effect on our
lives.
Wherever there is a self-limiting belief, a self-limiting behaviour
forms. It may take the form of:
• Procrastination
• Avoidance
• Anxiety
• Self-fulfilling prophecy
• Mediocre attempts
• Opting out
These behaviours in turn can lead to: -
• Fatigue
• Exhaustion
• Lack of interest
• Lack of stimulation
• Anxiety attacks
• Stress and
• Phobias
Can I use Motivation to enhance my performance?
Yes. Even if we are good a say a sport, we can
still experience, self-limiting beliefs.
For years it was believed that it was impossible for any human
being to achieve a four-minute mile; Then Trevor Banister broke
that “impossible” barrier, followed over a matter of
months by a number of other runners, each improving on the other’s
time.
Once the barrier had been smashed the self-limiting belief collapsed.
It has often been said that the only thing that separates the good
from the extraordinary is their mental belief.
Using the motivational tools that have become available over the
past few years now makes it easier than it has ever been to move
ourselves from the good to the extraordinary.
