What is a phobia?
Most people find themselves in situations, which cause them to
feel mildly anxious, or even anxious at times. However this kind
of common apprehension does not constitute a phobia. It only becomes
a phobia when it:
• Causes the person to avoid the feared situation
• Means the person endures the situation with intense distress
• Interferes significantly with work, education, family
and social life
What are the symptoms of a phobia?
• High levels of anxiety when exposed to the fearful situation
(palpitations, trembling, sweating, tense muscles, dry throat,
blushing, dizziness, sinking feeling in the stomach)
• An overwhelming fear of wanting to escape
• Feeling of self consciousness and inadequacy
• Avoidance of the feared situation, which can often lead
to isolation from friends, family and society
• Reliance on drugs or alcohol to get the person through
the feared situation
Why have I got a phobia?
When we are young, we experience life to the full, our emotions
are strong and we are unable to rationalise situations. Therefore
our experiences are much more intense than they would be as an adult.
Therefore if a child experiences a situation in which they become
fearful, that fear can be exaggerated to the extent it becomes a
trauma. In these circumstances a strong neural pathway is established
linking the situation with the emotion – fear. (It is irrelevant
whether the perceived threat is real or not the situation has become
linked to that emotion of fear.)
Even if, over the years, the event is forgotten, the memory remains
in the sub-conscious and a phobic (fear) response can be triggered
when a similar situation occurs.
In some extreme instances phobias can be caused by traumatic events
in latter years, or in some circumstances an almost uneventful incident
may trigger a long suppressed phobic response.
Can I control the phobia myself?
Although not easy, the best way to live with a phobia is to ignore
it. The more you think of your problem the more you will strengthen
your response.
Using will power to overcome the phobia rarely works because you
are attempting to use the conscious mind to resolve an unconscious
problem.

In addition to those above there is another category of phobias

Social phobia / Anxieties
Social fears are very common and a major cause of anxiety. Some
people often feel embarrassed in social situations making even everyday
situations a challenge – making a phone call, business meetings,
social gatherings, eating out, shopping. This category can to some
extent overlap with fear of situations.
According to research carried out in the United States, social
anxiety disorder is the third most common debilitating condition
after depression and alcoholism.
Social anxiety (also known as social phobia) is a type of anxiety
disorder. People who have social anxiety experience extreme and
persistent anxiety associated with social or performance situations.
Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being
judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings
of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation and depression.
If a person usually becomes anxious in social situations, but seems
fine when they are alone, then 'social anxiety' may be the problem.
Most people feel shy or nervous in certain situations. Public speaking
or entering a room full of strangers, for example, can cause mild
anxiety in many people.
What are the main situations people fear with social anxiety?
The most common situations that are feared by people who have social
anxiety include the following:
• Speaking in public
• Eating and drinking in public
• Writing in front of others
• Meeting new people
• Being the centre of attention
• Meeting or talking to members of the opposite sex
• Being watched doing something
• Meeting or talking with people in positions of authority
• Being criticised
• Using the telephone
• Going around the room (table) in a circle and having to
say something
